Registration of South African Birth

The following documents must be forwarded (original form) to the Department of Home Affairs, Pretoria, via the Embassy in Muscat:

• BI-24 - Notice of birth
• BI-529 - Determination of citizenship status
• Copy of Oman birth certificate (legal translation)
• Copy of parents identity document / passport
• Copy of parents marriage certificate

Notes on BI-529:
The person who completes BI-24 must complete BI-529, i.e. father of child, completes BI-24 then father of child must complete section A of BI-529 (personal particulars). Mother of child completes section B. Child's grandparents complete sections C & D.

It is suggested that parents complete the application for a South African child passport in Muscat when they hand in the forms for birth registration (both parents signatures required on passport application form). When applying for passport : 2 x passport size photographs (click here for details).

Allow approximately two (2) months for processing of birth certificate.

Please take note:

The Department of Home Affairs in South Africa does the processing of Birth Registration. The Embassy only receives the applications on behalf of the Department of Home Affairs and has no influence over the time that Home Affairs has stipulated for such applications to be processed –2/3 months.

Given the fact that Birth Certificates, once issued, have to be returned to the Embassy via the secure diplomatic bag which travels between South Africa and the Mission once every three weeks, the process may take up to 3 months to complete.

The Mission receives numerous enquiries and requests from South Africans who need their certificates for various urgent reasons after two months or so. There is very little, if anything, the Embassy can do to speed up the process.
